Passengers flying from British airports have been encouraged to pack less luggage by the European Transport Workers' Federation (ETF).
This is to ensure that baggage handlers reduce their risk of sustaining injury, with luggage by air currently exempt from health and safety weight limits that are a part of other industries.
The ETF, alongside the International Transport Workers' Federation, want to see a maximum limit of 23kg per item in addition to a phased reduction of 15kg.
They are also calling for hand luggage to be limited to 6kg per bag, which will, they argue, make aircraft safer by removing the danger of heavy bags falling from overhead lockers.
Lighter bags also have positive environmental implications because they result in less fuel being consumed.
Last Friday (November 27th), the ETF and ITF handed out 100,000 leaflets at 35 airports in 15 different countries to raise awareness of their campaign.
