Cape Verde set to Rise in Popularity During 2011
Africa's Cape Verde can expect to become a hot destination in 2011, with more and more visitors discovering what the West African archipelago has to offer. With the Lonely Planet revealing that the region was on it's hotspot destination list for this year, and the islands having a rich mix of European, African and Caribbean culture's, the location is set to attract visitors like never before.
Whilst Cape Verde currently remains a lesser known holiday destination, it is set to explode onto the getaway scene this year as officials look to push its offerings of tourism. Located 455km from Senegal in the Atlantic Ocean, there are many interesting activities and sights to explore in Cape Verde. 15km from the capital of Praia is Cidade Velha, a 15th century town which is now part of UNESCO's World Heritage List due to it being the first colonial outpost in the tropics for Europeans. Fogo Island is home to Mount Fogo, a huge volcano which adventurous travellers can climb, with the ascent approximately taking over ten hours. Glorious sunshine allows ample sunbathing time, especially on the islands of Maio, Sal, and Boa Vista with the latter location also a prized site for watching sea turtles. Meanwhile, Sal's incredible salt vistas' are stunning to view, and visitors can enjoy natural salt baths as part of the experience.
Several of the islands are accessible through flights from the UK, with Praia and Sal Amilcar Cabral Intl both hosting flights with TAP Portugal. So for those wanting a tropical and undiscovered destination for holidays this year, Cape Verde could be the ideal treat.
