France Sees Rising Second Home Ownership as Spain Slumps
France favoured over Spain for holiday properties
It has been revealed in some recent research that British holidaymakers are favouring France over Spain for new holiday properties. Whilst places such as Alicante and Malaga remain popular for many, Savills International said that France was now the most popular country for Britons looking to buy a second home.
Although Spain is cheap and offers many attractions for holidaymakers, the view on buying holiday homes in this nation has shifted, with France now attracting considerably more property queries. Many European countries have experienced turbulent housing markets throughout the recession, making many Britons wary of purchasing homes abroad. However, France has remained fairly stable and with flights to Paris, Nice and other top spots remaining easily accessible, people are assured that they will be able to visit their properties as often as possible.
Conducting a survey of the latest trends in overseas property ownership, Savills International said that 55 per cent of second home owners offset some of their costs by letting properties out, with a third expressing that this rental income actually more than covered their mortgage costs. With France second only to Spain in terms of numbers of overseas homes, and France now overtaking its rival as the number one spot for people looking to enter the market, demand for flights to the area is set to increase, especially as individuals look to head south for some winter sun.
