The tiny, historic, idyllic island of Nauru is worlds apart from reality, and takes 'getting away from it all' to an entirely new level. The Republic of Nauru is the smallest island country in the world, with an area of only 21 square kilometres. You could fit this miniature paradise into the city of London seventy-five times over! With a population of less than 10,000 people, you will feel as though you are a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of normal life, and you wouldn't be too far from the truth. Part of the wider region of Micronesia, Nauru is located in the vast turquoise waters of the Pacific Ocean, and with its nearest neighbour, Banaba Island, some 300 kilometres to the west, this little country is worlds apart from reality.
Nauru's only airport is Nauru International Airport, which is located in Nauru's capital city, Yaren, on the south-west coast of the island. Although, upon visiting Yaren, you would be hard-pressed to call it a city, as it is only 1.2 square kilometres in size and home to around 1,100 islanders.
Once one of the world's richest phosphate producers, Nauru's main industry has sadly dwindled, now that the supplies are becoming exhausted, but there is still economic hope in the secondary mining of deeper layers of phosphate, as well as in the country's small fishing industry.
Located 40 miles south of the Equator, Nauru has a blissfully warm climate, and is surrounded by a vibrant, show-stopping coral reef. Whether you want to dive in its luxuriously warm waters, relax on its white, sandy beaches, explore some of its phosphate mines, or delve into some of the historical artefacts left behind by the Japanese occupation of World War II, you'll have trouble tearing yourself away from this remote little world.
