Get on your bike in New York

Sporty travellers who fancy their chances in the biggest recreational cycling event in the USA should make their way to New York this spring for Bike New York's Five Boro Bike Tour.

Taking place on May 6th, this massive gathering sees more than 30,000 eager cyclists take to the streets of New York to pedal their way around a 42-mile route that is completely free of other traffic.

As the name suggests, the circuit takes in the five boroughs of the city, beginning in downtown Manhattan and finishing on Staten Island, with a ferry at the ready to transport weary participants back to the starting point.

The route takes in some of the most well-known landmarks in New York, including Central Park and the spectacular the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge leading to Staten Island.

After the race, cyclists are treated to a festival where live bands perform and numerous stalls and stands sell a variety of pick-me-up food and drink. Visitors can also indulge in a completely free professional massage.
