With the 2011 World Travel Awards looming, several cities have been revealed to be in the running as some of the top holiday destinations in the world. With travellers often using the eventual winners as a definitive list of the hottest locations to visit, cities winning the accolade can expect soaring demand over the coming months.

The World Travel Awards are split into regional categories, in turn recognising particular cities in the region. In Asia a large number of holiday destinations have made it onto the shortlist, with Tokyo, Singapore, Goa, Bangkok and Hong Kong all finding a place. Africa's shortlist includes Cape Town, Marrakech, and Luxor, whilst the Caribbean hotspots of Aruba and Barbados are also included. Closer to home, the European cities of Paris and Barcelona have both been tipped for awards, whilst Sydney and Auckland have taken the Australasian vote.

In addition to passing out awards to the best holiday destinations in the world, the popular and trend setting World Travel Awards also commends airlines, hotels, resorts, and even airports that impress travellers. The awards' president and founder, Graham Cooke, said "2010 demonstrated how consumers are increasingly using the list of winners as a reliable guide and means of reassurance when choosing their holiday, which is why winning one of the World Travel Awards has become more hotly contended than ever." So for any individual wanting to visit the latest up and coming hotspot, paying close attention to the awards will offer a clear indication of where to explore next.
