It has been revealed that Edinburgh Airport officials believe that passenger numbers will reach 20 million by 2040. With the airport doing all it can to add more international flights to its portfolio and become a major British hub, new statistics show that 12 million travellers will be using the port annually by 2020.

The figures come as the airport revealed growth plans for the coming years. Currently Edinburgh enjoys 9 million passengers annually, enjoying routes to destinations including Cologne, Bodrum and Venice. However, airport bosses have said that plane numbers in and out could rise from 116,200 to 141,300 in 2020, significantly increasing passenger numbers.

Whilst building new aircraft stands and hangers, bosses have assured that air and noise pollution wouldn't be significantly increased by the changes. Kevin Brown, managing director, said "The masterplan is our vision for our airport, the blueprint for its development over the coming years. It is a document that shows Edinburgh Airport, as Scotland's busiest airport, playing a crucial role in the growth and prosperity of Edinburgh, the Lothians and Scotland as a whole." He added that the growth figures were widely supported and that Edinburgh would develop into one of the country's most thriving airports in years to come.
