Alderney Week
Island festival held to celebrate local talent and an excuse for residents to have fun.
Family fun awaits travellers who visit the Channel Island of Alderney at the beginning of August when the the island's biggest carnival takes place. Alderney Week is eight days of games, competitions and entertainment for visitors of all ages. Established over 60 years ago, Alderney began as a village fair that extended to a week long celebration. It takes place at the height of the tourist season, which is often when the destination's population doubles in size.
Situated in the middle of the English Channel, the Island of Alderney exudes a strong community spirit and showcases the talent of its residents through musical, theatrical and sporting events during the festival. Each year, the event organisers select a different theme for the celebration and the residents put a lot of energy into decorating their shop windows accordingly.
Perhaps one of the biggest highlights from the week is Cavalcade Day, which takes place on the first Monday of August. The cavalcade begins with a procession of decorated carts and floats that glide through the town in a whirl of colour and music. After the parade, guests can enjoy stalls that offer games and chances to win prizes. There are also many other spectacular events, such as the Daft Raft Race and the Man-Powered Flight.
There is something to do every day during Alderney Week and visitors to the destination will delight in the home-grown theatre productions, talent shows and musical concerts that bring the whole island together each year.
