Benbecula Half Marathon and 10k run

The island of Benbecula is located in the Atlantic Ocean to the west of Scotland. It is part of the Outer Hebrides group of islands. The island hosts an annual half marathon and a 10,000km run. These events attract competitors from the local island area in addition to athletes from abroad. The half marathon is hosted annually in June and falls on the first Saturday of the month. The 10,000km runs are generally organised at different times during the year, but more recently in March.

Benbecula islands’ stunning scenery and smooth terrain makes an ideal location for runners to not only compete against the best runners that the Outer Hebrides and Scotland has to offer, but also provides an opportunity to take a stunning holiday at the same time.

In order to take part in the half marathon run, participants will need to register prior to the event via the running society’s website. They have a downloadable document that needs to be filled in and returned to the run organiser prior to taking part, although in certain circumstances, event registration on the day will be allowed. The price for entry varies but is usually around £12, with members of the Athletics Scotland group getting a discount.

Both the half marathon and the 10,000km runs take place at the Lionacleit Sport’s Centre. Teams are welcome to enter, and there are medals awarded to every finisher, regardless of the time taken to finish.
