Chania offers a rich mix of cultural diversity

Chania is a city steeped in culture derived from its great and varied history. Situated on the island of Crete, the largest of all the Greek islands, it is the second largest city on the island and home to a whole host of popular and diverse summer events.

Both the municipality and locals organise theatrical plays, concerts and exhibitions throughout the summer, with artists from both Greece and foreign climes taking advantage of what this costal destination has to offer. The Palaiochora Music Festival is one such event. Although small, this event is typical of the lively environment that Chania offers.

The Peace and Friendship Park is home to daily events in Chania; this beautiful landscaped arena offers a serene backdrop to fully appreciate the artistry of the performers.

Chania is also known for its large number of cinemas, including two open air venues. If you’re lucky, you may just happen across one of the local film festivals that these venues are renowned for, displaying both commercial blockbusters and independent movies.

The Venizelia athletics competition is a staple of the European athletics programme, so if you’re in town in late May or early June, then a trip to the National Stadium may well be called for to witness sporting history being made.

This beautiful coastal destination is one not to be missed. The Orthodox cathedral shows off the finest in Greek religious architecture, so take the time to stroll along the waterfront and venture further in to town; you won’t be disappointed by the sights and sounds!
