Every year, during New Zealand’s summer months, there are a variety of Busker’s festivals held throughout the country. Buskers are a delight in New Zealand, keeping the people entertained with their eccentric and exciting street performances. The Southland Busker’s Festival in Invercargill is one of the largest of its kind in all of New Zealand. It draws many of the same international acts who win awards and accolades at the World’s Buskers Festival in Christchurch each year.

The Southland Busker Festival celebrates the many entertaining men and women who take to the street to do performances for a living throughout the year. During the festival in February, the streets of Invercargill come alive with performers. Every street corner is a new venue. Cafés hold special performances and are busy with entertainment and the thousands of visitors who flock to the city for this special, entertaining event.

Some of the performances that are sure to be seen during the festival are pantomimes, street clowns, comedic ballroom dancing and statue performances. The performers get paid by the audience, who leave donations in their hats on the side of the street where they are doing their shows. The festival consists of over 40 outdoor street shows and two evenings of street performance entertainment throughout the weekend-long event.

The marriage of comedy and satire are alive and well in the Southland Busker’s Festival and it is a major draw for visitors around the globe.
