Jyvaskyla is the capital of central Finland and is one of the fastest growing cities in the country. It has a strong educational history and is home to the second largest university in Finland. The Jyvaskyla Arts Festival has been held in the city since 1956 and has become one of the biggest events of its kind in Finland, attracting over 40,000 visitors each year. Staged during the summer, the festival takes place at several venues, including the theatre, where performances include comedians, circus acts, contemporary mimes and dance displays. Churches in the city are host to music concerts, with beautiful classical and modern pieces being performed. Film screenings, debates and lectures are also held throughout the festival.

The event has a strong programme for children, with many activities being available, including workshops, music performances, storytelling and circus displays. The children’s programme concludes with Sunday in the Park, where music, food and drink are available for all, whether children or adults.
