NPL, New PlymouthThe Festival of Lights in New Plymouth is a spectacle not to be missed

Every year Pukekura Park is filled with light and music during the Festival of Light. The festival is an annual event that has a history going back more than 50 years.

For more than 20 years the TSB Bank Festival of Lights has lit up the whole area around Pukekura Park in New Plymouth, a destination that is more than 50 hectares in size. Among the glowing plants and trees, fluorescent pebble paths, shimmering lakes and waterfalls, there are some captivating features such as the Fire Poi Dancers and the talking giant. The whole of the park is lit up, even the wooden rowboats offering an opportunity for a romantic journey around the lake.

Poi is a Maori term that means spinning – the Fire Poi dancers incorporate the fire into their act which results in a wonderful mix. There is also a nightly programme of entertainment spread over two stages that has many local and international performers, singers and groups. There are various genres of music performed during the festival including rock, jazz and contemporary. The days of the festival are just as busy with a teddy bears' picnic, scavenger hunt and circus acts are a few of the events available.

The festival takes place at the start of the year and lasts over eight weeks. It has taken place since 1953. The lights were added in 1993 and the festival has been run by the district council of New Plymouth since then. Despite being a destination that is far away, there a numerous flights available
