This miniscule ball of glamour and fun, sitting on the glorious Mediterranean coast of France, is the second-smallest nation in the world.Monaco – or the Principality of Monaco, as it is in full – is the world's second smallest country (only pipped to the post by Vatican City), and the world's most densely populated country, with a population of well over 30,000 people. With a luscious Mediterranean coastline, Monaco sits next door to France, and its economy – mainly driven by its gambling industry – boasts the world's highest GDP.
Monaco does not have a main international airport of its own. You will fly into Nice Côte-d'Azur International Airport, 40 kilometres away in neighbouring France, and can enter Monaco by helicopter, taxi, bus or train. If you are searching for the country's capital city, you'll be searching for a while, as it doesn't have one of these either. With an area of only two square kilometres comprising the entire country, any individual city would have to be fairly microscopic!
You would be mistaken if you thought that its small size meant there was nothing to do in Monaco. Almost entirely urbanised, this miniature country offers an array of itinerary fillers. From the enchanting avenues of Monaco-Ville and La Condomine, to the glittering streets of Monte Carlo, the diversity this little gem of a nation has to offer never fails to amaze its visitors. Stare in awe as you walk past the grand, towering palaces, home to Monaco's prestigious Royal Family. Line your pockets with notes as you indulge in a touch of gambling in some of Monte Carlo's famed casinos, not least the world renowned Le Grand Casino de Monte Carlo. Breathe in the glamour of this exclusive, bewitching country. Welcome to Monaco.
