Home to port, good food and great wines, Portugal offers a delicious mix of charismatic cities and golden beaches.

Whether you are after beautiful beaches, historic cobblestoned cities or fairytale castles, you will be able to find it in Portugal.

West of Spain, Portugal is a popular choice for package holidays and wandering travellers alike. Its capital Lisbon is home to the country’s main air hub - Lisbon International Airport, but there are other airports dotted around the country including an international airport in Faro.

The beautiful city of Lisbon is one to be wandered at leisure, with weaving streets full of independent shops, bars and restaurants - and there are some great sights to be seen from the Castelo de São Jorge. Nearby, Sintra offers a magical world of fairytale castles and forests and is worth the 30km journey from the capital.

Not to be forgotten is Porto, a wonderful city in the north of the country where you can taste the famous tipple – and even take a tour around some of the port wineries.

Portugal is well known for its golden beaches and every summer thousands of holidaymakers head to the beautiful bays of the Algarve. An often forgotten and hidden gem of the country is the town of Coimbra, which is often described as the Cambridge of Portugal. This university town is set into the hills, with winding roads, fine architecture and some of the country’s best Fado (traditional Portuguese music).

Aside from its port and wine exports, some of the other key industries in the country include textiles, clothing, footwear, wood and cork, paper and of course, tourism.
