Drop of the green stuff in Chicago
The Chicago river ran green this weekend, as the city came out in force to celebrate St Patrick's Day.
Every year, the city dyes the Chicago River to mark the Irish patron saint's feast day, traditionally tipping in the dye at 10:45 am on the Michigan Avenue stretch of the river.
This weekend's events in Chicago were some of the many taking place across the US to mark the festival, helping St Patrick's Day to be one of the most widely celebrated national holidays across the world.
It is believed that the feast was first celebrated in the American Colonies in Boston in 1737, with the tradition soon spreading to New York and Chicago.
The custom has since taken off nationwide, with many towns and communities decking themselves out in green to mark the occasion, although few do it with quite the same enthusiasm as the residents of Chicago.
