New airport planned for Berlin

New airport planned for Berlin

Berlin is set for a new international airport after a German court gave the development the go ahead.

Work had originally been stopped as people living in the area complained about the amount of noise that would be generated by the airport.

Yet the court has backed a £1.4 billion noise reduction plan that will enable the development to continue.

With a planned completion date of 2011, the airport will be an extension of the existing Schoenefeld base and has been in development for nearly 15 years already.

At present the German capital has three airports, but even with the addition of Brandenburg International, Frankfurt will remain the country's largest centre for airtravel.

If the new airport is successful it is anticipated that the current Tegel and Tempelhof airports could be phased out.

Delta Airline, Qatar Airlines and Continental Airlines have all already signed up to use the Brandenburg International when operations commence.
