Driving up the tension in Monaco
The small but wealthy principality of Monaco is set, once again, to host one of most popular events in the Formula One racing calendar as the 64th Monaco Grand Prix approaches.
Between May 25th and May 28th this year, some of the world's fastest drivers will head to the sunny Mediterranean region to attempt 78 laps of the Monaco circuit, which is notoriously one of the slowest and hardest of the World Formula One championship.
The 3.34km course, which has remained virtually unchanged since 1950, takes the drivers through the narrow winding streets of the capital, Monte-Carlo, past famous landmarks such as the casino and the Loews hotel, in a glamorous and often picturesque setting.
Every year the tension is high, making exciting viewing, as the number of drivers abandoning the course rises, but those who can maintain control on the tight bends can ensure a pointed place, making Monaco one of the last high profile races which relies as much on the skill of the driver as the pace of the car.
