Snow time of year for a holiday
For those with snow withdrawal symptoms, New Zealand in June is the perfect time and place to enjoy a winter break as the annual Queenstown Winter festival comes to life.
From June 23rd to July 2nd the snow-clad ski resort town hosts what is reputedly the southern hemisphere's ultimate winter festival, which is not only a celebration of the mountains which surround it, but of the creative talents of the local people too.
Offering ten days of ski and snowboard events and competitions, as well as some less conventional adrenalin-filled mountain challenges, the festival also runs community workshops for those looking to get off the mountain along with some less traditional activities, which in previous years have included a cowpat-throwing competition.
Queenstown is located in the southern lakes region of New Zealand's south island, famous for its outdoor activities and with its rugged mountain ranges and wild countryside it was also the much used location for the filming of Peter Jackson's Lord of The Rings trilogy.
