Vienna, the city described by Mozart as "the best place in the world for my metier", will hold its annual music and cultural festival from May 12th – 18th attracting artists and performers from 15 nations worldwide.
In a year which celebrates Mozart's 250th birthday, the five week festival will feature 32 different productions of a theatrical, operatic and orchestral nature, from countries including
Brazil,
Japan,
India and
South Africa.
The festival will open with a series of piano concerts by Mozart, performed by Rudolf Buchbinder and the Vienna Philharmonic, and a free outdoor spectacular in the city's Rathausplatz square.
Visitors to
Vienna will be able to enjoy various pieces including works by Shakespeare, Luc Bondy's interpretation of Botho Strauss' Schandung (Violation) and a performance of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? as well as works by Dmitry Shostakovitch, whose 100th birthday is also celebrated in 2006.
An audio exhibit art project entitled 5,000 Love Letters, will also give visitors the opportunity to hear words of love dating back to 1890 at coffee shops around Vienna throughout the festival.
