Passengers' carry on at the airport

Passengers' carry on at the airport
Air travellers are being warned to keep their luggage in check as the introduction of new government guidelines will put a limit on what can be carried onboard a plane.

The Department for Transport (DfT) last week issued new rules indicating the maximum dimensions a piece of carry-on or hand-luggage can be, warning passengers could be stopped at check-in or security screening or as they board if their luggage is over the size limits.

Following a rise in online bookings, passengers are increasingly able to check-in over the internet, which allows them to bypass luggage check at the airport and take over-sized bags directly onto the plane.

Sue Pearson, general manager development, Nottingham East Midlands Airport said: "Quite often passengers take oversized suitcases and other possessions onto flights. People are increasing the size of their hand luggage, which is causing problems at security and slowing the process in passing through to the departure lounge and gates.

"If people ignore the rules, they may be refused boarding or their bag may be tagged and put in the hold at the gate".

The DfT indicates that carry-on baggage should not exceed total dimensions of 45in (115cm) with a maximum length of 22in, width of 18in and depth of 10in.
