Brussels Airport has announced that as of April 14th it has become a 100 per cent smoke-free airport.
The Brussels International Airport Company (BIAC) has instigated a no smoking policy in all of its public spaces, including the restaurants, bars and lounges in line with the Belgian Royal decree of December 13th prohibiting smoking in public places.
BIAC states that although they sympathise with passengers who smoke, the few smoking areas which were available at the start of the year have been taken out of use and ashtrays will no longer be available in any of the airport's public areas, a policy which "most travellers applaud".
Areas used by airport staff which are not open to the public will also be smoke-free zones, including corridors and staircases, under separate legislation which guarantees a non-smoking working environment for all employees.
In March 2006 Brussels Airport was awarded the title of Best Airport in Europe for 2005, sharing the top spot with Copenhagen airport, and based on passenger satisfaction surveys was also voted the third best airport worldwide in the 15 to 25 million passengers per year category.
