Fly out to
Florida Keys this July and you could be confronted by any number of short, stocky guys with tans and white beards competing to be the best Ernest Hemmingway they can at the annual Hemmingway Days festival.
Held in
Key West the week-long festival runs between July 19th and 23rd and involves all kinds of celebratory, macho activities for literary-minded folk.
Visitors can take part in anything from arm wrestling to Key Lime pie eating competitions at the American author's supposed favourite spot, Sloppy Joe's Bar.
There is also a marlin fishing competition, which runs over the course of the week, a five kilometre sunset run and an opportunity to 'run with the bulls'.
Tourist and locals alike can also take part in various literary activities including the annual short story writing competition organised by Hemmingway's granddaughter, Lorain, which has a prize of $2,000 (£1,120).
