Travellers flying into
Lisbon in July will witness the spectacle of around 100 historic Tall Ships sailing into port, as part of the 50th anniversary Tall ships race.
The first ever race took place in July 1956 with a fleet of 20 ships sailing from Torbay, on the south coast of England, to
Lisbon in Portugal.
However, the anniversary race will see nearly four times as many ships from 20 countries, with a total of crew numbering in the thousands competing along a similar course.
Starting out from St Marlo in France, the ships are scheduled to sail into
Lisbon on July 20th marking the end of the first race and will spend three days in port, celebrating with cultural and sporting activities, prize-givings and parties and a fireworks display.
The fleet of Tall ships will then depart from Lisbon on July 23rd with a parade of sail as they head to Cadiz in southern Spain.
