The advantages of city breaks is that they offer people a range of experiences within a small area, according to Don George, global travel editor for Lonely Planet.
Mr George told CNN that "there's such a vast range of riches in a small, pretty easily navigated space", adding this aspect is what "definitely … attracts me to cities".
As such he advises that in order to get a good idea of the city, people travelling to cities should "block out some time for aimless wandering" – that way they can escape the normal routes and discover the city for themselves.
However, city breakers also have access to high profile city destinations, with iconic features such as
Paris's Eiffel Tower,
New York's Statue of Liberty and the London Eye all offering tourists a unique experience.
The Association of Independent Tour Operators also states that city breaks are "an increasingly popular option" for travellers and lists
Marrakech and
Munich as possible destinations.
