Airport operator BAA has announced today that the number of people travelling to long-haul destinations rose in April, with 15 per cent more passengers flying to far-flung locations than during the same time last year.
The news comes after another UK airport, TBI-owned Cardiff International Airport, announced that it is to cater for a range of long-haul destinations this summer, including
Mexico,
Florida and the
Dominican Republic.
BAA said today that long-haul prompted its largest increase in passenger numbers. However, this was quickly followed by rising traffic from European scheduled, which was in second place with a rise of 10.8 per cent, and flights to
Ireland, which saw passenger numbers jump by 8.4 per cent.
Stansted was the busiest BAA hub, seeing 16.2 per cent more travellers than in April 2005
BAA also states that across all its airports, it catered for 12.4 million passengers and that its overall passenger figures increased by 7.8 per cent in April.
