A festival for lovers is the perfect reason to
fly to Hong Kong in July as visitors can witness an ancient Chinese tradition and embrace some romance.
The Seven Sisters Festival is a lunar event of the ancient Chinese calendar, taking place on the seventh moon of the year, which this year falls on July 31st.
The tradition can be traced back as far as the year 740BC and is still a major date on the festival calendar as young lovers take to the streets of
Hong Kong and congregate at Lover's Rock in Wan Chai.
Traditionally based around a story of the gods and divided love, the festival celebrates the tale of a weaver girl who was wed to a cow herder across the Milky Way but after neglecting her weaving duties was banned from seeing her husband, apart from on the seventh day of the seventh moon each year.
The festivities still focus around religious rituals and visitors to
Hong Kong can witness needlework competitions along with young women burning incense and making offering to the stars.
