To witness a temporary city appear in the desert take a flight to
America this August and head for the Black Rock Desert in Nevada, 120 miles north of
Reno, for the annual Burning Man festival.
Grown from a small spontaneous gathering into an annual community gathering of over 25,000 people, the festival, which runs from August 28th to September 4th, is described as "an annual experiment in temporary community dedicated to radical self-expression and radical self-reliance".
Open to all-comers and working on a policy of no commerce only community, travellers are expected to bring everything they need to be self sufficient in the desert, as well as any costumes, art works or performance pieces they wish to share, to help create the ultimate, alternative festival experience.
Music stages, events and cocktail bars are all free and spontaneous, and visitors are encouraged to get to know and share with their neighbours.
