Fly to New York in September for the city's oldest and supposedly best street festival, the Feast of San Gennaro.
A feast in the traditional sense, visitors to
New York should make their way down to Little Italy for what is a huge, 11-day Italian street carnival, between September 14th to 24th and sample some of the city's top indoor and outdoor Italian dining spots.
This annual salute to the patron saint of Naples draws people from all over
New York and beyond to sample the food stalls and street festivities, as well as the religious procession and candle lit mass which takes place on September 19th.
Soak up the Italian experience and take the chance to savour one of the festival's famous sausage, onion and pepper sandwiches, traditional gelati or some Zepole (sugary fried dough balls).
With everything from religious kitsch to cannelloni eating competitions, street entertainers and parades this festival which is now in its 79th year, offers a unique and wonderful glimpse of the city and the New York people.
