London's principal airport is to get better access to it, the Highways Agency (HA) has announced.
Junction four of the M4 at Hayes, West London, will give greater access to
Heathrow airport through the widening of roundabouts and slip-roads and the installation of traffic signals.
"The junction four improvement scheme will reduce the congestion around this busy junction, improving the journey for drivers travelling to Heathrow and Stockley Park and those regular drivers," said Dennis Sutera, HA project sponsor.
"We are also taking this opportunity to include some important safety benefits with new lighting and the concrete barriers as well as providing better information with new signs and gantries."
Improvements had already been scheduled for access to
Heathrow, but this latest announcement means that they are to be expanded and the timetable brought forward.
Workers will carry out improvements overnight between 21:00 BST and 05:00 BST, but it will result in 24-hour 30mph speed limits on the exit and entry slip roads and a 50mph limit on the main M4 carriageway.
