Holidaymakers in search of a true flavour of the wild west should
fly to Rapid City in South Dakota at the end of September for the Custer State Park's 41st annual Buffalo Round-up.
Re-enacting an age-old tradition in genuine cowboy territory, on October 2nd visitors can witness as teams of cowboys and cowgirls, along with local rangers, round-up the park's buffalo and drive them into corrals to branded, sorted and vaccinated ready for the autumn sale.
The exciting event, which will see some 1,500 buffalo herded across the state park, can be watched by spectators from designated points on the surrounding hillsides, from where they can experience power of the passing thundering herds.
Visitors to
South Dakota who tire of buffalo can turn their sights to the range of artworks by local artists from across the state on display at the Buffalo Round-up Arts Festival, which runs throughout the weekend, from September 30th to October 2nd and includes entertainment from both western and Native American performers and the annual Buffalo Wallow chilli cook-off.
