Set against the backdrop of
Thailand's historic capital city, Ayutthaya, the annual festival of lights or Bang Sai Loi Krathong, is an event not to be missed.
Travellers planning to
fly to Thailand in November should make their way to Ayutthaya, 75 kilometres north of
Bangkok, to witness the ancient festival rituals on November 4th and 5th this year.
Visitors to
Thailand can view the beautiful traditions as banana-leave lanterns are floated down the river and processions, complete with brightly-painted, beautifully-carved chariots, parade through the streets.
The festival, which is held around the Bang Sai Royal Arts & Crafts Centre, known for its revival of traditional folk skills and rituals, dates back over a thousand years, with links to ancient Hindu culture and Buddhist celebrations.
The two-day festivities, held annually on the 15th day of the waxing moon in the 12th lunar month, also include handicraft demonstrations and exhibitions, a beauty contest and fireworks displays.
