To view one of the largest Buddhist temple complexes in south-east Asia, visitors who
fly to Malaysia should make their way to the former colonial city of Georgetown, on the island of Penang.
Construction of the impressive Kek Lok Si Temple, otherwise known as the Temple of Supreme Bliss, was begun in 1893, taking until 1930 to complete the Pagoda of 10,000 Buddhas, the foundation stone of which was laid by the by the Thai King Rama VI and additions to which are ongoing today.
The entire temple complex is built upon a very auspicious site, on a hill in Air Itam, a suburb of Georgetown, utilising feng-shui principles and combines both Thai and Chinese Buddhist architectural styles.
Visitors to
Malaysia who choose to visit Kek Lok Si, the most recent addition to which is the 30.2 meter high statue of Avalokitesvara, Goddess of Mercy, can visit the souvenir markets lining the temple approach, the temple's vegetarian restaurant, tortoise pond, prayer halls and gardens.
