Holidaymakers taking advantage of late summer deals this year are being advised to take out travel insurance to cover lost and stolen items.
According to Direct Line Travel Insurance, the last three years have seen Britons lose £1.5 billion worth of items abroad, with £624 million worth of goods also being stolen.
Items such as clothing, sunglasses and cameras are the most lost or pilfered things for travellers.
And the main mistakes made by Britons include leaving items in hotel rooms, at the airport and on the beach.
"The summer holiday is many people's largest annual purchase but it can be ruined by loss or theft," said Chris Price, business manager at Direct Line Travel Insurance.
"This can often be made worse by people being unable to replace the items upon their return home because they had not taken out travel insurance."
According to esure, three-quarters of Britons take a digital camera or camera mobile phone with them when going on holiday abroad.
