Travellers
flying to Geneva this December could witness the city's historical Escalade procession on December 11th.
The event celebrates a night that saw the people of
Geneva win a battle against would-be invaders led by the Duke of Savoy attempting to breach the city's walls in 1602.
Every year since that glorious night, local people have remembered their victory with a torchlight procession while dressed in the costumes of 400 years ago.
Crowds of visitors line the streets to watch this spectacle, sipping a traditional Swiss soup known as marmite in honour of one woman who threw scalding hot soup at invading soldiers during the battle.
Those with a sweet tooth can purchase chocolate pots to smash and enjoy while the procession marches along both banks of the Rhone to St Peter's Cathedral, where patriotic songs are sung and a big party is held for all.
See the
Switzerland Tourism website for more details on this event.
