Medical emergencies and cancellations have triggered half of Sainsbury's Bank's travel insurance claims in the last five years, new figures reveal.
Other reasons for claims include misplaced baggage and lost money and documents.
The bank says these statistics indicate a need for travellers to take out holiday insurance to protect against incidents that cannot be predicted.
While those travelling in Europe can claim basic medical treatment on the European Health Insurance Card, this provides little substitute for full travel cover, it adds.
"No one likes to think about things going wrong when they're about to set off on a trip abroad," commented Robert O'May, travel insurance manager for Sainsbury's Bank.
"However, it really is essential to organise good cover for yourself and family whether it's for a long weekend, a week's holiday or a more extended break, after all, an unforeseen misfortune could happen anytime."
Recent research from Axa Travel Insurance revealed that Britons are set to splash out £97.3 billion on holiday-related items this year.
