Travellers looking for a bright and brash experience to kick off the new year should head to
Cape Town for the Minstrel Carnival on January 2nd.
This celebration was initially established to recall the antics of minstrels who travelled to
Cape Town on western ships more than a century ago and carries a distinct Creole flavour throughout the festivities.
Every year, the event sees various street parties and parades take place throughout the streets of the city before exploding in a cacophony of marches, musical performances, contests, dancing and more at the Greenpoint Stadium
Shows become more and more spectacular as performers compete to be the best of their kind in numerous competitions, while visitors cheer them on to become even more flamboyant.
With strong hints of vaudeville and burlesque, the Minstrel Carnival is more than enough to put a smile on the face of any visitor attending this
Cape Town event.
