Holidaymakers heading to
Malaysia this spring might want to check out the spectacular Penang International Dragon Boat Festival in May.
Usually held during the third week of the month, the event sees teams made up of local people racing each other in colourfully decorated dragon boats on the Teluk Bahang Dam.
Thousands of people flock to
Penang for the race, lining the river banks and cheering on their favourite team.
Each team has a cox who helps the boat's rowers keep in the same rhythm by beating a ceremonial drum.
A number of different races in men's and women's categories take place over several days, with a farewell dinner party held at the end of each year's event.
Visitors to
Malaysia can take the opportunity to take in the rest of Penang's attractions in between races, including its beautiful beaches and superb shopping.
For more information, take a look at the
Penang International Dragon Boat Festival website.
