London's
Stansted Airport has announced details of plans to revamp transportation links to and from the site.
Launching a 14-week public consultation today, the airport said that it is looking to enhance road and rail access in preparation for the opening of a second runway in 2015.
It stated that it wants to implement measures to slash car travel to the airport and instead focus on better public transport facilities, including longer trains and additional local rail and bus services.
In addition, the plans call for the Stansted Express to become a dedicated service at peak travel times.
"Our challenge has been to understand current and future travel patterns and to develop sustainable solutions that will meet the needs of people travelling to and from the airport," commented Alastair McDermid, BAA director for the Stansted Generation 2 project.
The Highways Agency, which looks after the UK's road and motorway network, is also expected to consult on plans to widen the M11 between the M25 and
Stansted Airport, and enhance access to the hub from the M11 and A120.
