Increasing numbers of students and graduates are heading to destinations in south-east Asia and
China for a long stay, according to new research.
However, the study by HostelBookers.com suggested that many are doing so to research their career options as well as for a holiday.
The website said that it has seen a 900 per cent increase in bookings for the region compared with last year, with 26 per cent of budget backpackers surveyed stating that they chose the area to immerse themselves in local cultures and languages for career development reasons.
"Between leaving 'official' education and starting a career is a very popular time in life for people to start globe-trotting. However, the notion of travellers as simply drifting backpackers is becoming increasingly dated," commented David Smith, general manager of HostelBookers.com.
Earlier this year,
United Airlines won a new non-stop route between
Beijing and the
USA, which is expected to launch later this year.
