BAA announces airport initiatives
Airport operator BAA has announced plans to slash congestion and reduce queuing times for passengers passing through its hubs.

Chief executive Stephen Nelson told journalists last night that its Putting Passengers First scheme will see the organisation invest an extra £40 million in airport security, including the recruitment of 1,400 extra security personnel and the opening of 22 security lanes.

Billions of pounds will also be channelled into new facilities, terminal improvements and capacity expansion ahead of the 2012 Olympic Games.

"As well as tackling the immediate issue of queuing times, we are ready to make major, long-term investments in British airports that will free the travelling public from congestion and provide a good experience at our airports, all for a few extra pounds per passenger," Mr Nelson commented.

Yesterday, the operator revealed that the new Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport will open on March 27th 2008.
