Growing numbers of Britons are expanding their horizons by taking a career break to go travelling, according to new research.
A study from Direct Line Travel Insurance has revealed that three million people have already taken sabbaticals from work in the last three years, with almost 5.5 million more workers considering taking an extended break.
About 43 per cent of those surveyed said that they would like to take a sabbatical to satisfy their cravings for overseas travel, with a third admitting to quitting their jobs just to escape abroad.
"Taking an extended break from work used to be the preserve of a privileged few, but now more and more people are taking time out from their careers to travel," commented Chris Price, business manager at Direct Line Travel Insurance.
Last year, research from gap year specialists Year Out Group indicated that
South Africa is the top destination for those looking to take an extended period of time out.
