Airport operator BAA has welcomed an announcement from the Department for Transport that it is to keep the Gatwick Express rail service operational.
A government review was considering proposals to do away with the service altogether in order to ease rail congestion, but has now decided to allow it to continue.
The service is used by passengers wishing to reach
Gatwick Airport from London Victoria and will remain in place until December 2008.
Stuart Condie, BAA planning and surface access director, said: "The retention of a non-stop quarter hourly rail service between London Victoria and Gatwick Airport will be welcome news for the millions of passengers who travel to the airport by public transport, and recognises Gatwick's position as a leading international airport."
The Air Transport Association has also welcomed the move, noting that the service is particularly useful for American air passengers visiting the UK.
