Virgin Atlantic has announced that it has entered an environmental partnership with Boeing which will see it purchase a number of eco-friendly aircraft.
The airline has put in an order for 15 787-9 Dreamliners, which use 20 per cent less fuel for every passenger onboard than other planes of a similar size.
Quieter takeoffs and landings are also promised by the aircraft, which is set to be launched next year, with passengers able to benefit from cleaner air, larger windows, increased stowage space and enhanced lighting onboard.
"This revolutionary aircraft will bring a step change to the industry, substantially reducing environmental impact and incorporating innovative design and advanced technology, while providing an enhanced flying experience for our passengers," commented Steve Ridgway, chief executive officer of
Virgin Atlantic.
The partnership also includes research into how fuel burn can be reduced and how carbon emissions can be slashed on the ground at airports.
Boeing announced earlier this month that it had received more than 500 orders for the 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.
