Holidaymakers flying abroad in the near future should make sure they do their research when it comes to exchange rates, according to the Post Office.
The strong pound versus the US dollar has recently hit the headlines for prompting numerous Britons to cross the Atlantic in search of retail bargains.
However, travellers could be even more savvy and opt for breaks where the actual cost of items usually bought while on holiday are relatively low, says the Post Office.
It states that
Bulgaria offers the cheapest shopping basket for British holidaymakers, with essentials such as sun cream, mineral water and insect repellent coming to a grand total of £16.86 on average.
Thailand,
Egypt and
South Africa provide the best options for those looking for a cheap long-haul holiday, with
Portugal found to offer the lowest priced shopping basket in
Europe.
"Our barometer proves that one currency does not mean one cost," remarked Kevin McAdam, head of travel services for the Post Office.
"With a difference of £32.25 between the shopping baskets in neighbouring Spain and Portugal, it is clear that there are savings to be made depending on where you choose to holiday in Europe."
The pound is currently worth just over $2, with the euro rising close to an all-time high against the dollar earlier today.
