British holidaymakers looking to shed a few pounds this summer have been urged to check out
Greece.
According to research from supermarket chain Somerfield, the country is the best place to visit for those watching their weight, as the average meal there harbours few calories compared with dishes in other popular destinations.
It said that a normal Greek meal without alcohol will contain 1,130 calories, with
Spain,
France and
Italy following behind in terms of calorie count.
The study also found that over half of UK travellers see healthy eating as important to having a good summer holiday, with a quarter expected to pick a destination based on how healthy the local delicacies are.
"It's good to see so many British holidaymakers taking their health seriously and trying to eat well on holiday," commented a spokesman for Somerfield.
"However, it's important to remember that holidays are for kicking back, relaxing and enjoying yourself."
Earlier this year, a study from research firm Mintel estimated that Britons spent about £135 million on healthy breaks involving holistic healing, spas, yoga and surgical recuperation last year.
