Holidaymakers flying from
Newcastle Airport have been warned that they could be grounded if they are discovered to have consumed a high level of alcohol before boarding.
In a campaign involving posters and leaflets at Newcastle Airport, Northumbria Police said that passengers who engage in drunk or disorderly behaviour at the hub or inflight could be spoiling their holidays by being abusive towards staff and other travellers.
Neighbourhood inspector Jamie Southwell warned that officers will be on continuous patrol at the airport and that a "robust approach" would be taken to any signs of disruptive behaviour.
Kevin McNicholas, security compliance manager at Newcastle Airport, said: "For the safety and security of all our customers it's important that drunken behaviour is not tolerated at the airport or on board our flights."
Last year, the airport served more than 1.7 million domestic passengers and 1.9 million international travellers.
