Passenger numbers at
East Midlands Airport (EMA) increased by more than a fifth between January and May this year.
According to new figures from the airport, more than 1.9 million people have passed through its gates so far this year, compared with nearly 1.6 million for the same period in 2006.
Popular European destinations for passengers departing in May included
Palma,
Alicante,
Dublin and
Malaga, with new routes to
Cuba and the
Dominican Republic being launched during the month.
"It is encouraging to see the continued growth of passengers choosing to fly from EMA, particularly to new routes such as Cuba as well as our popular destination to Palma," commented Penny Coates, EMA managing director.
Last month, the airport won the title of Best Airport at the Baltic Air Charter Association Awards 2007, the ceremony for which took place at Plaisterer's Hall in London.
