Airport operator BAA has announced a 0.3 per cent rise in passenger traffic at its UK-based hubs.
The company said that it saw 12.8 million travellers pass through its airports in May, with European scheduled traffic up by 1.8 per cent and long-haul routes increasing by 3.3 per cent.
In terms of long-haul traffic, destinations in
China and
India saw particular growth in passenger numbers, recording respective rises of 10.9 per cent 9.2 per cent.
The best performing airports were found to be
Glasgow,
Edinburgh and
Aberdeen, while in England
Gatwick and
Southampton have also seen positive changes in passenger traffic.
Last month, Edinburgh Airport celebrated its 30th birthday by burying a time capsule containing memorabilia such as boarding passes, airport and a political map of Scotland magazines at the foot of its air traffic control tower. The capsule will be opened in 2037.
