Plans to build a new airport in
Lisbon look set to be postponed following the publication of a study casting doubt on the viability of its proposed location.
The tender for the work was originally expected in October but may take place in early 2008 instead as a result of the publication of the Confederation of Portuguese Industry's study, New Europe reports. The new airport is expected to be completed in 2017.
Portugal's government has chosen to build a new airport because the current hub is nearing its maximum capacity. Plans for a new site in
Lisbon have been in discussion for several years but the decision on a final location has not yet been made.
"We are already behind schedule. The new airport should be ready by now, or at least be under construction," said Portuguese public works minister Mario Lino.
According to figures from Lisbon's tourism board, 2.5 million visitors are expected in the city this year.
